Avoid this car rental company in Rome at all costs. Either pay 50 euros per day for their insurance or risk facing a nightmare. Since we didn’t purchase insurance from them, they gave us a car with a contract explicitly stating there was a dent. It was nighttime, and we didn’t take photos of any other damages. Upon return, they immediately pointed out a hole in the left mirror—which we accepted. However, after returning the car, they charged my credit card 2599.99 euros. When questioned, they sent an invoice listing various scratches and damages. It was absolutely shocking—one small dent cost us over 1,000 euros! This is the first time I’ve encountered such a frustrating car rental experience. We've been waiting almost a month, but they still haven’t provided a detailed breakdown of the charges—just the invoice with pictures. The rental platform is actively helping us negotiate, but the car company is extremely uncooperative. I highly recommend avoiding this car rental company.
Initially, it was agreed to return the car with a full tank. However, upon arrival, they required an empty tank and charged 67 euros for fuel. The staff was inefficient and kept chatting, taking an hour to complete a single process.
The staff at the Rome airport counter spoke very poor English, hardly understandable. They kept pushing for full insurance, and seemed very displeased when we declined. They gave us a subpar car despite our large luggage. At the parking lot counter, they kept stalling and refusing to change the car, only offering a FIAT500 convertible, which was a struggle to fit our luggage into. I was quite dissatisfied with the service attitude of the Rome airport staff, but to avoid affecting our itinerary, I didn't argue further.
Despite booking over a week previously so that Avis would have plenty of time to set things up, when we arrived they did not have our car ready (Merc E Class) and did not have anything comparable to offer. After calling their associates, the only available alternatives were a monstrous Merc G Wagon (imagine trying to park that in the land of the Fiat 500) for more money, or a BMW 3 Series Touring. We took the BMW. Then we were informed that the insurance that we'd already paid for via Easyrentcars would not offer adequate cover, and for fully comprehensive cover we had to book with Avis. Given that we'd already had a car damaged in a car park in Italy on a previous trip, we felt that we had no option but to comply with Avis' advice.
