To drive in Japan, local driver’s license must be held for at least 1 or 2 years (according to different car rental company).
Japanese law requires that all drivers who do not hold a Japanese driver’s license must hold a country of origin driver's license and an international driving permit issued under the 1949 convention on international road traffic. Driving Permit must be issued under the 1949 Convention on the International Road Traffic. No exceptions. An IDP issued under the Vienna Convention on Road Traffic 1968 will not be accepted. The only International Driving Permit Acceptable must have the A/B/C/D/E stamps.IDP with type "D" stamp will be required if the vehicle you choose is with 8 or more seats.
Please note that an International Driving Permit does not replace the requirement for a regular driver's license. And you must carry your original driver’s license, IDP or translation with you all the time when driving in Japan. Please show the staff both your local driver's license and IDP (International Driving Permit) at the counter, or you will be rejected to rent the car.
Please bring your passport, local driver's license along with IDP(International Driving Permit) with you when you come to the car rental counter. Or you are not allowed to rent the car in Japan.
Customers with driver's licenses issued in Switzerland, Germany, France, Belgium, Slovenia, Monaco and Taiwan are allowed to drive vehicles complying with Japanese laws and regulations only when they carry both the original license issued in the above countries/regions and a Japanese Translation of such issued by JAF, or foreign embassies or consular offices in Japan. No exceptions.
Age Requirement
The minimum age to drive in Japan is 22 years(age may vary by car category). Each car rental company has its own age requirements. If you're 18-25, you are likely to have to pay a young driver fee. If you're 65 or older, you may have to pay a senior driver fee.
