To drive in Iceland, many car rental companies require the driver to present a valid national driver's license that has been held for at least 2 years.
An International Driving Permit (IDP) is highly recommended for anyone living outside of Iceland. Especially if your domestic driver's license is printed with non-Roman Alphabet (Arabic, Japanese, Cyrillic etc), anInternational Driving Permit (IDP/IDL) or an official translation in English is required together with your driver's license when you drive in Iceland.
*Attention! Some car rentalcompanies would have different requirements. Please check Terms and Conditions during the booking process.
I booked Skoda Octavia two wheel drive. Since the vehicle was not available, Suzuki S cross four wheel drive was given during pick-up. The staff convinced us that four wheel drive is better and that the vehicle is upgraded free of cost. It made us think that we are getting a better vehicle. But it turned out that's not the case. A two wheel drive would have been more than enough for our journey. Also since we had taken a four wheel drive car, it impacted the mileage and so we had to spend a lot more on fuel.
Other than that we did not face any issue. The vehicle was given in good condition. It was good to drive.
6Nice ride, smooth booking via Qeeq, painful pickup at Lava Rentals
The car was in an amazing condition, but the pickup process was so painful.
Had to wait 45 minutes for the pickup at the airport to reach the Lava rental site and then another 90 minutes to pick up the car. Lava needs more staff to handle the demand.
The store is a bit far from the airport. When I went to the store to pick up the car with my pre-order, I was told there were no cars available and that they would refund me. Of course, I couldn't accept this, so I discussed the possibility of upgrading the car model. The store said there were no upgraded models available either. I then suggested going to their parking lot to check, and the staff accompanied me. Unexpectedly, a Hyundai SUV had just been returned, so I insisted that the store rent me this recently returned car. The staff eventually agreed.
The most frustrating part was that when customers go to the store at the agreed time to pick up their car, they are told there are no cars available. The store doesn't proactively find a solution but instead directly proposes a refund, completely disregarding the customer's prior booking.

Extremely satisfied with the self-driving experience. The song of ice and fire did not disappoint. Iceland's public transport system is not well developed, and some places can only be reached by driving yourself or joining a tour.
Renting and returning the car was convenient, but finding the car was a hassle with unclear instructions. The car's condition was not great, warning lights appeared several times, and there were strange noises.
Waited ages for the car in a huge line.
When we got the keys it was a 5 minute walk in torrential rain to pick up the car.
Other car rentals had a bus to take them there and back.
On the way back there was a bus to take us back to the terminal which was appreciated.
The service was alright, and the car was fine too. However, during peak seasons, it seems like there aren't enough staff at the counter, so both picking up and dropping off the car take time. Additionally, because it's a bit far from the airport, waiting for their shuttle also takes time.
Experienced the car rental policies in Iceland. Minor scratches resulted in compensation costs exceeding the rental fee. The same brand in other countries is trustworthy, but here, you must be cautious.
Initially, I was worried about hidden charges when picking up the car. I specifically told the staff that I had already bought insurance through QEEQ, and they reassured me that there was no need to purchase additional insurance. They didn't try to upsell any services afterwards. It was a smooth and reassuring experience.
The queue was quite slow. If you're rushing to catch a flight, it's best to arrive early. I used Apple's built-in maps and found them more useful than Google Maps. It's important to buy full insurance and gravel insurance as stones can easily hit the car on the road.

Frequently asked questions
Q1.What is an insurance excess?
The excess is the amount you'll only be liable for in case of damage(under Collision Damage Waiver) or theft(under Theft Protection) of the vehicle. Information about the excess will be clearly stated in the price inclusion when you reserve a car on QEEQ.
Q2. How can I add an addtional driver?
You are advised to make a request upon your arrival at the rental counter. Additional charge per day will incur unless '1 Additional Driver Included' is stipulated on the rental. Please note that the same licence and age requirement applys to the additonal driver. The addtional driver is supposed to present the required licence document along with the main driver at pickup.
Q3.What if I want to pick up or drop off my rental car out of office hours?
QEEQ will show you the car offers available at your chosen time on the search results. However, pick-up or drop-off out of general opening hours may subject to an extra fee unless self-service pick-up or drop-off is available. After you reserve a car on QEEQ, we will inform you of specific policy of the car hire company by email.
Q4. Can I take the hired car to another country or cross border?
If you want to pick up your car in one country and drop it in another, your search results will show you cars you can do that with. If you're planning to cross any borders during your trip, bear in mind: 1. You may have to pay more. There are often extra fees, taxes or additional cover you'll pay at the car hire counter. 2.It may not be allowed. Depending on where you're hiring, you may not be able to take your car to another country. Please email us if you want to take your hire car into a different country during your trip, and we'll talk you through your options.
Q5. Can I pick up my car at one location and return it at different location?
Yes. You can pick up the vehicle in one place and drop it off in another. An ‘one-way fee’ will incur. Whether it is inclued in the rental price or what additional cost may arise will be clearly stated at the time of booking on QEEQ. Please inform the car hire company of your drop-off location when you pick up the vehicle or contact them directly during your trip. You will find a phone number on the rental agreement you signed at pickup.
